Pied avocet – kluut

The pied avocet is one of my favorite birds, in stylish black and white and with this cheerful upturned beak.

Een van mijn favoriete vogels is de kluut. In deftig zwart en wit en met een vrolijke omhooggebogen snavel (wipsnavel ?)

Bar-tailed godwit – Rosse Grutto

Bartailed godwit in winter feathers, probing the mud of The Waddensea for something to eat. This picture was taken in the Netherlands but many of these birds fly non-stop from their breeding place on the Arctic coast to New Zealand for the winter. That is more than 10.000 km and that takes them about a week!

Rosse grutto in winterkleed zoekend naar voedsel in een drooggevallen stukje waddenzee. Dit exemplaar is gefotografeerd bij Terschelling, maar de meeste van deze vogels vliegen in één keer door van hun broedplaats in Alaska naar hun overwinterplek in Nieuw Zeeland. Dat is ruin 10.000 km en dat doen ze in ongeveer een week!

Sanderlings – Drieteenstrandlopers

I posted about these birds before. I have to capture them whenever I see them. They are so cute and funny the way they behave. There were hundreds of them at the beach of Terschelling this year running along the waterline looking for shellfish and little crabs to eat.

Ik heb al eerder foto’s geplaatst van deze vogeltjes. Ik kan het niet laten ze te fotograferen als ik ze zie en er waren er honderden op het strand van Terschelling dit jaar. Ze renden langs de golven op zoek naar aangespoelde schelpdieren en kleine krabbetjes.

Birdwatch

Saterday  October 1st, while I happened to be on holliday on the isle of Terschelling, it was Eurobirdwatch day, BirdLife’s annual birdwatching event in Europe. Well, on the beaches of Terschelling there were plenty of birds to watch:

Zaterdag 1 oktober, terwijl ik toevallig op Terschelling met vakantie was, was het Eurobirdwatch dag, het jaarlijkse vogeltel evenement waar tienduizenden vogelliefhebbers in heel europa (trek)vogels gaan tellen. Nou op het strand van Terschelling waren genoeg vogels te zien.

Jellyfish – kwallen

At the moment I don’t really have time for photography or blogging, but just to show I am still alive, a quick blogpost with some jellyfish pictures I took earlier in the year.

Stormy weather -Stormachtig weer

On the dutch Wadden islands the wind always blows harder than anywhere else in The Netherlands. Here are some pictures of a sunny but stormy day on Terschelling.

Eurasian coots update – Meerkoeten update

De coots family of my post of july 29th is still going strong. There are three chicks left and they are growing fast. They can find their own food now, though they are also still being fed. Their metamorphosis is about halfway. Almosts all the red has dissappeared. Soon they will be quite pretty. Soon, but not yet…

De meerkoetenfamilie uit mijn blogje van 29 juni zit nog steeds in de sloot achter ons huis. Er zijn nu nog drie jongen en die groeien voorspoedig. Ze kunnen al aardig zelf voedsel zoeken, hoewel ze ook nog gevoerd worden. Ze zijn al halverwege hun metamorphose. Bijna al het rood is van hun kop verdwenen. Nog even en ze zijn echt mooi. Nog even…

Eurasian Coots

There is a family of coots breeding very near our house, so I can follow the developments closely. A few days ago the first two chicks came peeping from under their mothers belly and soon after their was a whole bunch of them. One of the most daring went exploring on his own. Ready for his first swim.

A familie meerkoeten nestelt vlak bij ons huis, dus ik kan de ontwikkelingen op de voet volgen. Een paar dagen geleden kwamen de eerste twee  kuikens vanonder de moeder tevoorschijn piepen en al snel waren het er een heleboel. Eentje waagde zich al bij het water. Klaar om te zwemmen.

Ducklings

These sweet and idyllic images of little ducklings could go straight into a childrens picturebook. But the reality is not so nice. These two are only one or two days old and already 8 of their siblings have been eaten by predators. So these little ones will probably be gone in a day or so too.

Salamander

We are having an exceptionally cold spring this year, so obviously there was not going on much in the pond as yet. Or so it seemed, becaused when the sun came out this afternoon I suddenly saw a whole lot of salamanders swimming around.

Waterballet

At the end of our garden is a small canal were we often sit when the weather is nice. The birds that are usually swimming there seem to like the attention and start giving a show.
