At the moment I don’t really have time for photography or blogging, but just to show I am still alive, a quick blogpost with some jellyfish pictures I took earlier in the year.
Eigenlijk heb ik op het moment helemaal geen tijd voor fotograferen of bloggen, maar als teken van leven toch even een snel bericht met een aantal foto’s van aangespoelde kwallen die ik eerder dit jaar maakte op Terschelling

Ivy is by far the most gratifying plant in our garden. It flowers from the end of august till far in october, when it is about the only plant left where insects can still find nectar and pollen. Every day it is swarmed with flies, hoverflies, all kind of bees, wasps, butterflies etc. etc.
De klimop is verreweg de meest dankbare plant in onze tuin. Hij bloeit vanaf eind augustus tot ver in october en is dan de enige plant waar nog nectar en stuifmeel te vinden is voor de insecten. Hij is elke dat vergeven van de vliegen, zweefvliegen, allerlei soorten bijen, wespen, vlinders etc. etc.

I think they are quite pretty, these violet coppers (Lycaena helle). These little butterflies have the conservation status ‘near threatened’,but I saw them in abundance in the Belgium Ardennes this spring.
Ik vind het zelf een mooi vlindertje, deze Blauwe Vuurvlinder (Lycaena helle). Ze staan op de rode lijst als ‘kwetsbaar’, maar in de Ardennen zag ik er dit voorjaar nog massa’s vliegen.

This time I am rather certain I have got it right: This is the stripe-faced dronefly or Eristalis nemorum. I know because of its characteristic behaviour of hovering over a female that is feeding on a flowerhead.
Dit keer weet ik het vrijwel zeker: dit is een puntbijvlieg ofwel een Eristalis nemorum. Dat kun je zien aan het karakteristieke gedrag van het mannetje dat boven een vrouwtje zweeft terwijl zij een bloem bezoekt. Een soort baltsgedrag.
Sometimes there is some confusion when a bumblebee maneuvers inbetween the two flies. Soms is er enige verwarring wanneer een hommel zich tussen de twee zweefvliegen manoevreert. 
The bumblebee though is not impressed and goes on collecting nectar undisturbed.
De hommel is niet onder de indruk en gaat onverstoorbaar verder nectar te verzamelen.
This is my entry in the Daily Post weekly photo challenge of this week.
Usually when I post a picture of a flower with an insect, the insect is the main subject. But this time it is all about the plant. This is a Whorled Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum verticillatum) and very rare, at least here in the Netherlands.
The flowers grow in clusters around the upgoing stem, while the flowers of the much more common Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum multiflorum) in the second picture hang in rows from the underside of the horizontal stems.

De coots family of my post of july 29th is still going strong. There are three chicks left and they are growing fast. They can find their own food now, though they are also still being fed. Their metamorphosis is about halfway. Almosts all the red has dissappeared. Soon they will be quite pretty. Soon, but not yet…
De meerkoetenfamilie uit mijn blogje van 29 juni zit nog steeds in de sloot achter ons huis. Er zijn nu nog drie jongen en die groeien voorspoedig. Ze kunnen al aardig zelf voedsel zoeken, hoewel ze ook nog gevoerd worden. Ze zijn al halverwege hun metamorphose. Bijna al het rood is van hun kop verdwenen. Nog even en ze zijn echt mooi. Nog even…

When you are out with your macrolens and on the lookout for bugs you are always well served by the flowers of the members of the carrotfamily or Umbelliferae. They are always loaded with all kind of flies, bees, hoverflies and all sort of other insects like the sawfly in the first picture.
Als je op stap bent met je macro lens en op zoek bent naar insecten kun je bij schermbloemigen altijd terecht. Je vindt er massa’s vliegen, bijen, zweefvliegen of zoals hier zaagwespen.

I suspect this cranefly landed here by accident as they usually have little interest in flowers. Ik vermoed dat deze langpootmug hier per ongeluk is beland, die hebben anders meestal weinig interesse in bloemen.

Looking from a distance these flowers just look a little dirty but when you come closer you find they are covered with little ants.
Van een afstandje zagen deze bloemen er een beetje viezig uit, maar als je dichterbij komt zie je dat ze vol zitten met kleine mieren.
Meadow pipit, or tree pipit – I can never tell the difference – on the lookout. It soon became clear why: a bit further down the road I spotted two juvenile pipits in the grass.
Gras- of boompieper – ik weet nooit het verschil – op de uitkijk. Al snel werd duidelijk waarom: een eindje verderop zag in twee jonge piepers in het gras.

This frog was sunbathing on the edge of our pond. To take his picture I was going as low on the ground as I could, flat on my belly, so I could see him straight in the eye. It made him look much more impressive than seen from my normal point of view.
Deze kikker zat lekker in het zonnetje op de rand van onze vijver. Om deze foto te maken ging ik zo laag mogelijk bij de grond, ofwel plat op mijn buik, zodat ik hem recht in zijn ogen kon kijken. Zo zag hij er veel indrukwekkender uit dan vanuit mij normale gezichtspunt.

This beauty is a member of the leaf beetle family, I think it is the Chrysolina cerealis, but I am no expert so I could be wrong. It was difficult to get a good picture of this beetle because there were so many grasses and leaves around him. When I finally managed to get an unobstructed view he was refusing to look at me and showed me his backside. Well at least it was a very colourful backside.
Deze schoonheid is lid van de familie van de bladhaantjes. Ik denk dat het de Chrysolina cerealis is, maar ik ben geen expert. Hij was moeilijk te fotograferen omdat hij zo tussen de sprietjes en blaadjes zat en toen het uiteindelijk lukte hem goed in beeld te krijgen wilde hij enkel nog zijn achterste laten zien. Maar het was natuurlijk wel een hele kleurrijke achterste.

The Garden chafer (Phyllopertha horticola) is supposed to be damaging, feeding on leaves and buds while the larvae eat the roots of grasses a.o. I never noticed much of that in my own garden though. To me it is just one more pretty beetle.
De Johanneskever (Phyllopertha horticola), ook wel bekend als rozenkever, schijnt redelijk schadelijk te zijn. Hij vreet blad en bloemknoppen en de larven vreten aan de wortels van je gazon. Zelf heb ik daar nooit veel van gemerkt. Ik vind het gewoon een leuk kevertje.

Finally we have some nice hot weather and I can just walk into the garden with my macro lens attached to my camera and shoot away. Here is a tiny little bee visiting some sedum flowers.
Eindelijk hebben we lekker warm zomerweer en kan ik gewoon de tuin in lopen met mijn macrolens op mijn camera en valt er van alles te fotograferen. Hier is een super klein bijtje op de sedumbloemen.

I love these blue/purple geraniums and so does this solitary bee apparently. I don’t know what kind of bee it is exactly. I read somewhere that there are over 20.000 species in the world, many of which look very much alike. So I will leave the identification to the experts.
Ik vind deze blauw/paarse geramiums prachtig en blijkbaar vindt deze solitaire bij ze ook leuk, of in ieder geval lekker. Ik heb geen idee wat voor één het precies is. Ik heb ergens gelezen dat er meer dan 20.000 soorten zijn waarvan er veel erg op elkaar lijken. Dus ik laat het determineren maar over aan de experts.
It is almost a ritual: the annual visit of the bee beetle when the blackberries are in bloom. This year I thought I had missed him until last weekend on one of the last blossoms there he was!
Het is bijna een ritueel, eens per jaar als de bramen bloeien krijgen we bezoek van de penseelkever. Dit jaar had ik ze nog niet gezien tot afgelopen weekend er op één van de allerlaatste bloemetjes opeens één verscheen.
Taking pictures was quite a challenge because of the strong winds. The bee beetle was a clever little guy and anchored himself by hooking is hind legs around a flower petal Fotograferen was lastig door de sterke wind. De penseelkever was zo slim zich te verankeren door zijn achterpoten om een bloemblad te slaan. 
All of a sudden, while I was taking these pictures, a second bee beetle landed on the same flower.
Plotseling, terwijl ik aan het fotograferen was, landde er een tweede penseelkever op hetzelfde bloemetje
That resulted in a fight of course and after a lot of wing flapping, the intruder took off. Dat gaf natuurlijk ruzie en na een boel vleugelgewapper ging de indringer er weer vandoor. 
Actually this post should have been called ‘Yellow dung fly on nettle’, but somehow I did not think that sounded very actractive, so I decided to keep it simple.
Eigenlijk zou deze post ‘strontvlieg op brandnetel’ moeten heten, maar dat vond ik toch niet zo wervend klinken, dus heb ik het maar simpel gehouden.

Last month the rapeseed in Northern France was in full bloom. Enormous fields, small patches and whole landscapes coloured yellow.
Vorige maand stond in N.Frankrijk het koolzaad in volle bloei. Enorme velden, kleine stukjes land en complete landschappen kleurden geel.

The last picture was taken through the carwindow while driving on the highway to Paris (I was not behind the wheel BTW).
Deze laatste foto is genomen door het autoraampje terwijl we over de snelweg naar Parijs reden (ik zat niet achter het stuur).

There is a family of coots breeding very near our house, so I can follow the developments closely. A few days ago the first two chicks came peeping from under their mothers belly and soon after their was a whole bunch of them. One of the most daring went exploring on his own. Ready for his first swim.
A familie meerkoeten nestelt vlak bij ons huis, dus ik kan de ontwikkelingen op de voet volgen. Een paar dagen geleden kwamen de eerste twee kuikens vanonder de moeder tevoorschijn piepen en al snel waren het er een heleboel. Eentje waagde zich al bij het water. Klaar om te zwemmen.

Young fieldfare shortly after he left the nest. He was sitting absolutely immobile, no doubt hoping I would overlook him. No such luck.
Jonge kramsvogel, net uit het nest. Hij zat absoluut doodstil, ongetwijfeld in de hoop dat ik hem over het hoofd zou zien. Mooi niet…
Some pics of solitary bees that visit our garden at this time of year. We nickname them ‘bellysliders’ because they pollinate the flowers with their belly, as you can see clearly in the third picture.
